U.S. Angling is a 501c3 charitable organization that provides leadership for our U.S.A. National Fishing Teams as they compete worldwide, and is about to send its first ever Women’s Match Fishing Team to the World Championships. The US Ice Team has been successful for many years.
Seventeen Countries will compete in Hungary for the world Championships later this month. Match Fishing is very popular in other parts of the world, and for the first time, the US is sending a Women’s Team to compete.
Match fishing is a shore fishing event, where competitors are all assigned a specific section of shoreline. Anglers will try to catch the heaviest bag in a two-day tournament, with four-hour matches held each day. The specialized equipment is unique to the sport and consists of a special seat box anglers sit on, telescoping poles similar to a cane pole, and very small lightweight tackle. Only live bait is used and anglers toss ground bait into the water to keep the fish nearby. It is very fast paced and catches of 3 to 4 fish per minute is the goal to be competitive.
Other team members include Kristen Monroe from WI, Penny Smit and Elise De Villiers from FL. Elise is a veteran match-fishing angler, and has competed in prior tournaments.
Shelly Holland said, “learning this new type of fishing is improving my skills, and it will definitely carry over to hard water”. Barb Carey said, “ being on the first Women’s Team is an honor, and Shelly and I have been working hard to be competitive against Women with years of experience.
Teams that fish for US Angling are responsible for their own fundraising, which is estimated at $3000 per angler. Stormy Kromer,
